Matthew Marino, PT, MSPT

Physical Therapist | Applied Sport Scientist | Performance Coach | Professional Ergonomist

Matthew Marino began his career in the fitness industry as a personal trainer in 2001. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Science (2005) and a Master’s in Physical Therapy (2006) from Northeastern University. Since then, Matt has completed decades of post-graduate training and holds numerous advanced certifications in rehabilitation, sport science, coaching, and ergonomics.

Matt has extensive clinical and coaching experience across orthopedic, industrial, neurological, and long-term acute care settings. He has also trained athletes ranging from youth to the professional level. His passion lies in helping people heal, enhance their health and fitness, and perform at their highest potential.

A lifelong multi-sport athlete, Matt brings deep personal experience to his professional practice. He has participated in and played a wide variety of sports including rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, trail running, mountain biking, baseball, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, golf, basketball, tennis, badminton, skateboarding, and snowboarding.

In the clinic and gym, Matt utilizes cutting-edge technology to assess physical, physiological, and cognitive performance. His services include baseline evaluation, athletic profiling, movement and performance testing, and customized treatment and training plans. His work aims to identify and eliminate specific limitations, prevent injuries, and optimize performance in sports, work, and everyday life. His offerings include:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Personalized blood flow restriction rehabilitation
  • Metabolic analysis, including resting metabolic rate and graded exercise testing (VO₂ max testing, threshold testing, fat oxidation testing, training zone determination, and repeated sprint ability testing)
  • Breathing assessments (capnography, spirometry, respiratory performance, guided breathwork)
  • IMU and force plate testing
  • Evaluation of movement, strength, power, agility, speed, and overall fitness
  • Training program design and coaching (in-person and remote)

Outside the clinic, Matt provides consulting services in medical devices, exoskeletons, wearables, and assistive technologies. He is a globally recognized expert in this field, contributing to product development and standardization efforts through ASTM International, where he was a founding partner of the Exo Technology Center of Excellence and remains an active member of the ASTM F48 Committee on Exoskeletons and Exosuits.

Matt is also co-owner of Evolving Innovation, a Portland-based consulting firm dedicated to workplace safety, ergonomics, injury prevention, return-to-work solutions, and performance optimization.

In his free time, Matt enjoys climbing, hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, skateboarding, playing sports, and spending quality time with his family and friends.
